Fugitive Roman Polanski holed up in Swiss chalet
Monday, December 7th, 2009

Fugitive director Roman Polanski is firmly ensconced in his Swiss chalet under house arrest for an unclear duration.
The director, who is wanted in the US on 30-year-old child sex charges, looked pleased in a photo that surfaced from the scene showing him pulling up to his home in the luxury mountain resort enclave of Gstaad.
Polanski, who wears an electronic monitoring anklet, has free run of his home, the Milky
Way, where he is staying with his wife and their two children. The house arrest was the result of his posting $4.5million in cash. He has spent more than two months in jail in Zurich.
Polanski and his family stayed behind shuttered windows with two security guards walking around the grounds. Reporters and paparazzi were positioned on an adjacent hill.
“Mr Polanski and his wife just asked us to say they are not coming out. There is no point in waiting, so you can all leave,” said one of the guards.
Gstaad is a celebrity-frequented haven where locals are known for keeping their distance. Elizabeth Taylor and Roger Moore have visited the enclave.
Roger Seifritz, head of the local tourism office, said celebrities “go shopping, sit down in restaurants without anyone around, and this is why they come back to Gstaad – to have this freedom to be themselves without having to worry. You could sit in a cafe and have cake and coffee without realising that someone famous is sitting next to you having a sip of tea or reading a book.”
Polanski will stay under house arrest until the Swiss government decides on whether to honour an extradition request for him from the United States.
