Oprah Winfrey’s BFF and business associate Gayle King are not lovers, King said.

The pair’s suspected lesbian relationship stems from rumours and a televised road trip they staged together last year. But the attractive King said if she and Oprah were lovers, they would in fact be telling the world.

Speaking to reporters at the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards in New York City, King said: “The thing [is], if we were gay, we would tell you. We would so tell you. We wouldn’t try to keep that a secret because there’s nothing wrong with being gay. So if we were, we would tell you. The truth of the matter is we’re not. It’s hard enough for me to get a date on a Saturday night as it is.”

Winfrey has had a male partner for many years named Stedman who is kept out of the limelight.

King, however, appears on Winfrey’s show and works with her on a number of ventures. She added: “This isn’t a rumour I’m trying to continue to explore, but no there’s nothing, there’s nothing wrong with it.”

Earlier out showbiz lesbian Rosie O’Donnell told Howard Stern she did not know if Oprah and King were together but that they were the emotional equivalent of a couple.

Ex-heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson welled up with tears talking about the deaths of his four-year-old daughter, Exodus, and his trainer, Cus D’Amato, on Oprah Winfrey’s chat show in the US.

He said his first instinct was “a lot of rage” when told that Exodus had died back in May when the little girl had apparently strangled herself in a freak accident. Her neck was caught in a treadmill cord at the home of her mother Sol Xochitl in Phoenix, Arizona.

Mike told Oprah: “From all my experience in rehab, I took responsibility. She had to be buried, she had to be taken care of.

“There was no animosity. There was no anger towards anybody.”

Talking about how her death had affected him, he said: “My first instinct was a lot of rage and I am so happy I had the tools in life not to go in that direction.”

It was the first time the boxer, now 43, had been interviewed by Oprah.

Mike was often momentarily lost for words during the emotionally-charged, hour-long chat which he used to promote the DVD release of Tyson, the new documentary about his life.

Talking about Cus, who died in 1985, he said: “After he died I started drinking and doing drugs. I lost the desire to fight.”

Oprah praised the documentary, calling it a “study in humanity”.

Cher has revealed she once enjoyed a passionate affair with Tom Cruise which lasted several months.

Speaking on Oprah, the veteran star confessed, “I was crazy about him.” And she said that Tom was a shy lad of just 23 and she was 39 when the fling began.

The couple are thought to have met at a White House fund-raising event, just after his film Risky Business proved a hit. “It could have been a great big romance because I was crazy for him,” the 61-year-old told hostess Oprah Winfrey.

And the audience whooped and cheered as she told of one “long night” they spent together.

“He was shy,” she said. “He said he felt like such a boob in school and nobody talked to him. We went on a date once for dinner in a New York restaurant and the waitress was from his old school. He told me she never talked to him back in school, but now he was recognised he got all her attention.”

It is thought that the affair ended when the Top Gun star met Mimi Rogers, who became his first wife in 1987.
