Ex-heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson welled up with tears talking about the deaths of his four-year-old daughter, Exodus, and his trainer, Cus D’Amato, on Oprah Winfrey’s chat show in the US.

He said his first instinct was “a lot of rage” when told that Exodus had died back in May when the little girl had apparently strangled herself in a freak accident. Her neck was caught in a treadmill cord at the home of her mother Sol Xochitl in Phoenix, Arizona.

Mike told Oprah: “From all my experience in rehab, I took responsibility. She had to be buried, she had to be taken care of.

“There was no animosity. There was no anger towards anybody.”

Talking about how her death had affected him, he said: “My first instinct was a lot of rage and I am so happy I had the tools in life not to go in that direction.”

It was the first time the boxer, now 43, had been interviewed by Oprah.

Mike was often momentarily lost for words during the emotionally-charged, hour-long chat which he used to promote the DVD release of Tyson, the new documentary about his life.

Talking about Cus, who died in 1985, he said: “After he died I started drinking and doing drugs. I lost the desire to fight.”

Oprah praised the documentary, calling it a “study in humanity”.
